Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach that emphasizes the cultivation of compassion, both towards oneself and others, as a central component in promoting psychological well-being. It was developed by psychologist Dr. Paul Gilbert as an evolution of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and draws from various disciplines, including evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and Buddhist psychology.
At its core, Compassion-Focused Therapy recognizes that humans possess a natural capacity for compassion but often struggle to direct it inwardly or towards others due to factors such as self-criticism, shame, or fear. CFT aims to address these barriers by fostering the development of a compassionate mindset, which involves understanding and valuing the importance of compassion for oneself and others.
At Stickney Counseling we utilize CFT to help clients find compassion for themselves and others. We see the person within and structure our therapy for the individual, not the diagnosis or problems. As we are not our diagnosis or our issues. Utilizing CFT, our therapist tailor sessions goals in collaboration with you the client to ensure the best care and results.
