Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy
Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy
Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy is a type of evidence-based psychotherapy that is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It was developed by Dr. Edna Foa and her colleagues and has been widely researched and proven effective.
PE therapy aims to reduce the distressing symptoms of PTSD by helping individuals confront and process their traumatic memories. The underlying principle of this therapy is that avoidance of traumatic memories contributes to the persistence of PTSD symptoms. By gradually and repeatedly exposing individuals to their traumatic memories in a safe and controlled environment, PE therapy seeks to promote emotional processing and reduce the power of those memories.
